We all know that working in the special education setting can be difficult at times. As a special education teacher with a limited budget, I would like some guidance on how to appropriate my minimal funds. My current situation is as follows:
- chalk board
- overhead projector
- small white boards (2 ft by 1 ft boards)
- bank of 4 computers with internet access and word processing capability
My first inclination is to ask for a media projector so that I can present things to my students in a more engaging and interactive way. Is this a waste of funds? I would appreciate and ideas anyone has.
Hi there from a fellow Walden student!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to respond to your question about a media projector. I am by no means a technology whizz but do love to integrate technology wherever I can because it is motivational and has a whole heap of practical applications.
I'm not sure how anyone teaches without a media projector these days, especially at HS level. And, since you are dealing with student who have difficulties with mainstream learning I would think that the visual nature of the projector is essential.
Now, smartboards I think are a waste of money since most teachers either don't have the time or experience to build all the necessary notebook lessons... but a projector which hooks up to your computer so that you can have the students follow you on their computers...DEFINITELY!
Check out my blog for lots of exciting technology websites.

I think the request for an LCD projector is a good idea and will be helpful to and also good for your students.
ReplyDeleteI too agree that an LCD projector is a valuable asset. I am a former special education teacher and I know where you are coming from regarding your budget.
ReplyDeleteWhen your students can see exactly what you are talking about when you use visuals, they are much more likely to be turned on to your lesson. I never did have the luxury of having an LCD projector, but I did see what a kick my students got out of being able to be the teacher using an overhead now and again.
To allow students to man the controls while you deliver a lesson using an LCD projector does wonders for their sense of self and the amount of information they can retain.
Good luck with your budget requests.

Thanks everyone for your comments regarding the technology I can use.
